A seismic shift is moving the industry from a single data warehouse to a logical data warehouse with multiple systems, analytical techniques, programming languages, and diverse data types. Teradata (NYSE: TDC), the analytic data platforms, marketing applications and services company, introduced the advanced Teradata Database 15, which delivers on the promise of a logical data warehouse.

"Teradata is delivering on its vision of an agile and liquid experience for all users with Teradata Database 15," said Scott Gnau, president, Teradata Labs. "Users can now orchestrate analytic queries across multiple systems, integrate and consume JSON data, write and run non-SQL languages in-database, and leverage new analytics. Teradata Database 15 delivers on the Unified Data Architecture promise of enabling users to look across all data to get new, powerful insights. Teradata bulletproof technology makes it possible."

Teradata enables customers to cross the chasm from a single data warehouse to a logical data warehouse through its innovative technology.

- From Query Single Database To Query Multi-Databases and Sources
- From SQL To SQL, Java, Perl, Ruby, Python, and R
- From Structured Data To Structured and Multi-Structured Data (XML, JSON, Weblogs)
- From Business Users To Business Users and Developers
- From Reporting/Ad Hoc Queries To Reporting/Ad Hoc Queries and 1,000s of In-database        Analytics Algorithms
- From Disk Data Storage To Disk Data Storage with Solid State Drives
- From Row Data Storage To Hybrid Row/Column Data Storage

Teradata Database 15 offers new capabilities to empower analytics. A new software product, Teradata QueryGrid, provides virtual compute capability within and beyond the Teradata Unified Data Architecture, enabling companies to access and process analytic queries across multiple systems. JSON integration allows businesses to acquire and use data immediately to support analytics and innovation. Embedding and running user-written SQL and non-SQL languages in parallel within the database provides enhanced architectural flexibility needed by application developers. The Teradata Database offers enhancements to temporal capabilities and adds three-dimensional (3-D) representation and processing of geospatial data, along with enhanced workload management and system availability.

JSON: Adapting to dynamic data
Teradata has enabled customers to add Java Script Object Notation (JSON) data to their data warehouse. This is a significant advancement, because JSON is the primary language that powers the Internet of Things, a global collection of millions of sensors and embedded microprocessors. Analyzing data in its native JSON structure offers immense agility to the organization to adapt to dynamic data and implement improved business models as soon as new data comes from the source. Database redesign and physical table changes, and the effort and time required for them, are not required when new data is acquired in JSON. The Teradata Database provides the flexibility with simultaneous schema-on-read and schema-on-write capability, delivering business agility and a frictionless experience to get data in and out of the warehouse. With JSON integration deep within the database, customers can apply Teradata Database’s features and functionality to the analysis of JSON data.

Architectural flexibility: Freedom for application developers
As analytics evolve, Teradata is focused on empowering application developers and programmers whose requirements are often different. They utilize a separate set of tools, techniques, and programming languages than business intelligence SQL programmers. Enhancements in Teradata Database 15 provide application developers access to a wider variety of data, flexible application architecture, and the use of a robust development environment, without having to learn new parallel programming skills. Developers can now select from a variety of scripting languages: Perl, Ruby, Python, and R. Both application developers and business intelligence SQL programmers can develop, embed, and run their applications in-database taking advantage of the Teradata Database performance benefits, without extracting data to a siloed server.

Orchestrating across the enterprise
As databases and analytic environments evolve, users need intelligent links between analytic platforms. Working within and beyond the Teradata Unified Data Architecture, Teradata Database 15, with QueryGrid capability, offers bi-directional data movement and pushdown processing to open-source Hadoop. Queries can be initiated from the Teradata Database to access, filter, and return subsets of data from the Hadoop environment to the Teradata Database, all without IT intervention. This allows data analysis in the Teradata Database, which can make use of data not currently stored in the data warehouse. This orchestration is not only possible within the Teradata Unified Data Architecture, also referred to as a logical data warehouse by Gartner, but beyond the UDA with links out to other databases, as well.

Answering the 3-D business question
Teradata extended the three-dimensional (3-D) geospatial and temporal analytics in-database capability. Geospatial analytic capability now includes the “z coordinate,” which offers the ability to represent height or altitude and analyze the relative heights of locations or objects. 3-D logic is now built into geospatial analytical functions, allowing users to ask 3-D-related business questions. For example, telecommunications companies can now determine the height of obstructions around cell towers, which impact call quality. Property and casualty insurance providers can outline flood zone regions and then calculate the potential financial losses based on the depth of floodwaters in insured homes. In addition, Teradata Temporal syntax is standards-compliant and the Teradata Database significantly improves the performance of selected temporal queries, allowing users to perform more queries to get answers to time-related business questions.

System Enhancements
A range of availability and supportability features make Teradata Database more reliable and easier to use than ever before – systems perform at a higher level of availability and enhanced features help queries execute when expected. In addition, Teradata Customer Services experts are now able to more quickly identify and fix problems when they do occur. There are also diverse enhancements in support of Teradata Active System Management and Integrated Workload Management. They provide better controls and let customers set guidelines to better match their goals and workload criteria, as well as resource-sharing.

Teradata Database 15 raises the bar for analytics. These new features provide unprecedented power, ease of use, and flexibility for end-users and for IT, enabling business agility and a frictionless experience.

Teradata Database 15 is now available, with Teradata QueryGrid capabilities to be available in the third quarter of 2014.
