LCD prices dropping, despite World Cup fever

|

Despite some predictions that World Cup soccer fever could send prices of LCD TVs higher this month, the screen component just got cheaper, a trend that should continue to make products more affordable to users.

Prices of LCD (liquid crystal display) panels used in large, 37 inch to 42 inch screens fell by US$15 each, while 19-inch and 17-inch panels used in computer monitors dropped $5 each, market researcher WitsView Technology Corp. said Friday. The prices are negotiated every two weeks by LCD panel makers and computer and TV makers, and these declines represent pricing for the second half of May.

Although users probably won't see an immediate impact on prices in stores, prices could start coming down soon. LCD panel makers are increasing production at new factories, causing a glut that is sending panel prices down.

One factor supporting retail prices for LCD TVs currently has been the expectation World Cup soccer fans would snap up new TVs ahead of matches, which run from June 9 through to the championship game on July 9. The price decline noted by WitsView, however, points to possible slower than expected sales, which could mean bargains for users if stores in their areas had stocked up on LCD TVs ahead of the games.
